Murray studied Piano, Trombone and Singing from a very early age achieving Grade 8 in all disciplines by the age of 13. By adulthood Murray qualified as a private Music Teacher becoming an Associate of the Royal College of Music (ARCM) and DipABRSM in Musical Theatre. Thereafter he studied Orchestration and Theatre Organ performing in numerous UK Cathedrals and also bygone venues such as The Thursford Collection, Cotton Mechanical Museum and The Bygone Village.
In 1990 after a spell playing Trombone with the Musicians Union Big-Band, Murray returned to keyboards and started playing professionally in Theatre Pit orchestras, turning his hand to Musical Direction in late 1991. Since then Murray has been Musical Director or Choir Master to an extensive range of Amateur and Professional productions. These include 42nd Street, Chess, Annie, Oliver, Beauty and the Beast, Me and My Girl, Little Shop of Horrors, Barnum, Scrooge the Musical, Stepping Out, Jesus Christ Superstar, Hired Man, Hello Dolly, Oklahoma, Cabaret, Anything Goes, Grease, amongst others.
Other work includes being the creator and Musical Director for “Showstoppers – An Evening in the West-End”, Head judge for the UK’s leading talent show “Star-Maker” and the provider of vocal and band arrangements for many cabaret and cruse ship performers. In addition Murray has spent many a summer and panto season working with well known artists including Rolf Harris, Felix Bownes, Ted Rodgers, John Inman, Bernie Clifton, Jim Davidson, Keith Harris, Norman Wisdom, Darren Day and even playing keyboards for Phil Collins.
Murray spent 10 years as resident Musical Director for Panto’s in Norwich, Gt Yarmouth and Lowestoft and spends all his spare time as a private piano teacher and vocal coach.
